Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the knowledge of life and longevity, is the oldest, most comprehensive
scientific discipline, a complete health care system or healing system
that was preached and practiced in the ancient times by omniscient sages.
Closely associated with the Indian thought process, the origin of this
system can be traced to the Vedas, the earliest codified knowledge body,
which deals with all aspects of the universe.
Ayurveda is also known as the “ Science of Awareness”. The
word has its origin from two Sanskrit terms –“Ayus”
which means life and “Veda” which means knowledge. Ayurveda
it literally means knowledge about life. The basic philosophy of Ayurveda
is to make people aware of their life style, diet, exercise and mental
activities to achieve prefect balance in mind, body and soul. Thus Ayurveda
focuses on absolute perfect health and NOT disease whereas the modern
medicines stress only on the body and neglects the mind, senses and the
soul. Any infirmity in the mind, senses and soul leads to illness in the
Ayurvedic definition.
The system of Ayurveda medicine evolved over thousands of years through
processes of experience, observation, experimentation and intuition. It
is the most practical and sensible preventive system in the world. It
is practiced intact even in today’s technology driven world. Ayurvedic
system of medicine prescribes time tested and trusted methods to improve
your physical and mental activity.
Ayurveda medicines has ways to totally rejuvenate the body and mind These
procedures improve your physical and mental activities measurably using
botanical preparations. While modern medicines prescribes medicine which
concentrate on maladies, Ayurveda focuses its main attention on health,
its insistence on keeping the mind and spirit strong by orbiting the inherent
vital strength with herbal remedies and natural invigorating methods.
Ayurvedic medicines and philosophy has been very popular in most western
countries due to the growing popularity of yoga. It is simultaneously
social, spiritual, emotional, psychological and medical. It has gained
significance in this modern world due to its uncannily holistic approach
to the well–being of the individual. In the health care centers,
Ayurveda is the governing principal behind integrating treatments and
developing specific life style management programs. Founded on the wholeness
of mind, body and spirit, the art and science of Ayurveda is emerging
as an important health care option in the western countries. Holistic
health in one of the trends of the modern world and complementary medicines
is viewed by many as a solution to the rising incidence of chronic illness
and disease and spiraling health and medical care costs in the western
world.
In developed countries, people are plagued by chronic diseases and
psychological illness. Chronic diseases such as heart diseases- high
blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, rheumatism, insomnia, obesity,
neuralgia, fatigue, sinus congestion, constipation, stress, anger, nervous
tension, anxiety, depression, varicose veins, and skin complaints are
continuously rising in incidence causing increasing mortality and morbidity.
Ayurveda offers health solutions that deal with the methods to help
bring a person into a state of complete balance. These solutions are
not restricted to sophisticated formulas or medicine but goes to the
extent of prescribing a personalized life style for each individual.
The intensity of the diseases determines the kind of health solution.
If it is a recent illness or diseases it can treated by home remedial
measures but in a chronic situation where the disease has spread from
one body system to another, the treatment requires a full range of Ayurvedic
formulas that includes health massages and specific diets.
How Ayurveda works?
The first step in Ayurveda treatment is diagnosis to determine the
constitution of the person. That is a unique way by which the patient
who is diagnosed first and not the disease.
The same disease might appear in different forms in two persons because
of their different constitution. Due to this variation in constitution
the medicines and treatment may be different for two people for the
same illness. This difference in treatment methods according to the
constitution is essential to bring back the natural balance of the biological
humors. The constitutional approach is the essence of the Ayurvedic
system. Understanding the patient’s constitution helps one to
lead a life style that is most befitting his constitution, thus optimizing
his health and creative potential.
According to Ayurvedic system, human body consists
of three primary life forces or biological humors, which are Vatha,
Pitha and Kapha. These three doshas are called the tridoshas. A balance
among these life forces is essential for proper health. Any imbalance
among the tridoshas causes a state of unhealthiness or disease.
